However, many others do not experience this. They claim that despite practicing self affirmations, they don’t see any results from it.

Why is it that there is 2 differing views? Why does some people claim it works and others don’t?

Firstly, let’s understand what exactly is self affirmation. Practicing self affirmations is basically the act of repeatedly affirming to yourself, something that you desire to have. Self affirmations are practiced by chanting or reciting the affirmation repetitively. You can practice self affirmations for anything that you desire.

Here’s an example of a positive affirmation;

- “Everyday in every way I am getting more and more confident”

Just a simple statement like that is fine. Or lose the “everyday in every way”. Just go something like “I am becoming…….”.

Affirmations are made using ‘I am’, ‘I can’ and ‘I will’ statements. Such as “I am confident” or “I can be confident” etc.

How Does Affirmations Work?

Affirmations works because of the power of intention. When you practice affirmations, you are declaring your intention to the universe and everything in it. It is not just a mere verbal practice. The universe helps you in the background to achieve your goals when you do affirmations.

Our brains cannot differentiate between reality and something that is imagined vividly. Intellectually we know the difference, but the brain accepts both as reality. The more intense and real the imagination, the more the brain will accept it as real. This is the same when doing affirmations. The more intensity and emotion you put into it, the stronger the affirmation becomes. Then the brain will then accept that affirmation as reality.

And the more repetitions of the affirmation you make, the more it becomes ‘real’ to the brain.

So how comes affirmations doesn’t work for some people?

So why is it many people say that self affirmations are ineffective? Is it because the power of intention is not real? Or does the brain actually feel that what you’re affirming does not reflect the truth?

The following 2 reasons are the main cause of why self affirmations do not work for some people.

The first reason is because they are not doing their affirmations correctly. What do I mean by that? As stated earlier the power of intention is displayed when we are repeating affirmations with power, passion, emotion and intensity. When there’s no power, no passion, there’s no belief. The brain would immediately and completely reject the affirmation when it is repeated in a weak, uninspired manner.

The second reason is due to lack of congruency after practicing the affirmation. After the doing the affirmation, you must also put in your effort to make it work. You must try your best to be congruent with it.

We should always adopt this mind-set when practicing affirmations. Affirmations should not be thought of as the end all solution for any problems. Rather, effort and determination on our part is required to ensure that practicing self affirmations can indeed be effective and useful.
