Be Your Own Boss! The Moment is Now!
Well, economy be damned! While many live in fear of losing their job, now is the perfect time to start a small business and start creating their own economy.
Do you dream of owning your business, but know that you’ll have to start part-time? No problem! Most smart entrepreneurs start small and grow in a focused, controlled way. They keep costs down and keep a day job to keep a roof over their heads. But they stay focused on the big picture: To be their own boss.
The key is to do something you have the passionate about. Don’t pick a business where you think you’ll make lots of money (but really couldn’t care less about). You’ll fail. You must absolutely eat, sleep and dream about your business to make it really take flight. No skills? That’s OK. You may need passion more. You can always hire or partner with someone who has the skills.
Starting a small business takes effort, focus and lots of time. So maybe your day job is all consuming? You’ll have to carve out a specific schedule (and stick to it!) to make this business work. Don’t just try to “fit it in” when you have time. It won’t work. Trust us on that. You must commit and be very proactive about it.
So if you’re baker working in a restaurant and you dream of starting your own artisan bakery, be patient. Build slowly-especially if you’re career keeps you working crazy hours. You can start by renting a kitchen and making bread to sell to local cafes. You don’t need to jump in with both feel and buy a restaurant. Stay focused and start within your means.
Before you start a new venture, know your monthly expenses and check your savings and insurance. When your business starts, you need to know what you need. Make a budget and stick to it when buying new supplies. Until the cash starts to roll in, don’t go hog wild at the office supply superstore. Stay lean and mean until you feel you can branch out.
Starting your own business is very exciting! It’s easy to get carried away or even overwhelmed and shove the idea into a drawer when it doesn’t immediately pan out. Re-work it, find a partner or just change your expectations, but keep at it. You’re your own boss now, so make yourself a tough one!
