Laser Mole Removal Information
To remove a mole with a laser it needs to be a nevi mole. A thin mole on top of the skin. These treatments can take three or four days to complete depending on the size of the mole. Laser mole removal is generally done on moles that are brown or black in color on top of the skin.
A laser seals off blood vessels so there is no blood during this process. What happens is the beam of light goes into a darker colored mole and it absorbs the light causing the mole to break up. The mole then is absorb through the body. There is no cutting process just the beam of light directly into the mole.
Before the procedure, the surgeon numbs the area and then begins with a low setting on the laser. If the mole is small, the treatment takes very little time. Of course, larger areas take more time and often more laser mole removal treatments. There is a sensation from the laser. It varies from a minor pulse to a snap, much like one that comes when you snap a rubber band on the skin. Depending on the location and your sensitivity in that area, it can be anywhere from barely noticeable to uncomfortable.
You should avoid the sun after a procedure to avoid scarring and it allows the area to heal quicker. It is advised to stay out of the sun up to 2 months after the procedure. There will be a scab after the laser removal but it will generally fall off after about 3 weeks.
With a laser mole removal procedure you are more likely to get infection. You should treat the area very carefully to avoid this. Most laser surgeries use anesthetics.
Before you have the procedure, make sure you get a quote from the surgeon. Ask that he include all potential charges. The session costs vary from state to state, with the low end being around $50 and the upper reaches about $500 per session. Your insurance won’t pay for the treatments since it is cosmetic surgery and you’ll be responsible for 100% of the bill.
