We have been told year after year that an education is important. Is it really? Do you know why? At our math comic strips web site we deal with this question quite a bit. In this article we will be focusing on why it’s important for our children to get a good education.

Many might not know this, but a good education equips us with power. Graduating from the various steps in the school ladder (i.e.: elementary school, middle school, high school, college and university, etc. gives you power and flexibility over your future life. It’s true that some jobs provide “on the job” training, but these positions are becoming fewer and fewer as we embrace a world of globalization. Keep in mind that many employers won’t even consider you if you don’t have the minimum educational requirements.

With a well-rounded education you become more resourceful. Nobody knows everything about everything, but a well-rounded education equips you with principles that you will be able to apply to any situation. This is important because you will be able to succeed in situations that you have never faced before. For example, suppose asks you what time it is. You might not have your own personal watch handy, but if there is a clock on the wall, you could tell them what time it is. Why is this? You have been educated to tell time in the past, so you know basically how to do it no matter where you are. You don’t need to have your own personal watch…you can use the clock on the wall. An extremely simple example, yes, but you get the point…

A great education often means that you and your family can enjoy a better quality of life. People with great educations are often the last to get laid off when the economy turns sour. It’s also true that people who lack in education have a harder time finding a new position in this climate as well.

A well-rounded education also provides you with understanding. Say you are going on a trip to Asia, China to be more specific. You may never have gone to China before, but by studying and educating yourself about this country before you go, you will have a greater understanding of China, and the Chinese, before you even set foot in the country.

Networking opportunities often go hand-in-hand with a well-rounded education. Have you ever heard of the saying that “birds of a feather flock together”? That’s often very true. A good education often means that you will be able to “flock” with more “birds” like you. Who knows what sort of job and other opportunities will come out of these encounters.

Aren’t people with a good education more fun to be around? They seem to have knowledge on almost any subject, and can keep a conversation rolling along. Armed with a good education, if someone happens to bring up an obscure topic at the dinner table, you will be able to join in and give your opinion. Wouldn’t it be great to be able to educate others and make new acquaintances and friends in this way? I think so…

These are just a few ways why education is important. There are a number of ways in which we can educate, such as math comic strips and math comic books to teach essential math skills to children, and we will deal with this issue in an upcoming article.
